YSL Vernis à Lèvres/Glossy Stain #8 Orange de Chine.

today i want to show the other colour of Yves Saint Laurent's Vernis à Lèvres that i bought: #8 Orange de Chine. i have just talked about the Glossy Stains in general a few days before, please read my previous post for detailed information (here). in short, they are lip glosses with intense pigmentation plus a lip staining effect - and phenomenal staying power.
they contain 6ml and retail for about 30€.

the packaging is nice and functional, the applicator very precise and easy to use.

Orange de Chine is a very bright, intense orange with a coral tinge. it contains a subtle pink and pale gold shimmer which isn't really visible once applied.
swatched, both the gloss and the stain it leaves behind are quite orange, but on my lips its red tinge is more intense making it more wearable than i thought it would be. it's a very true vermillion when layered.
i imagined it to be more pantone-tangerine-tango-ish - i'm glad it isn't. i feel like everything is in this colour at the moment. it's like a BB-cream-hype. *rant modus off*
if i only dab it onto the lips sheerly with my fingers, Orange de Chine creates a soft peachy/coral stain which is easier to sport in daytime.
when i was doing a hardcore-staying-power-test it lasted 9 hours + (!) on me, without any touch-ups. of course it wasn't as bright as when i just applied it, but my lips were still a bit shiny and had remarkable colour although i followed my regular eating/drinking habits. normally i would wear the lip colour for about 6 hours before i reapply to refresh its impact and keep a neat look.
i really love my bright lip colours to stay on so fool-proof, these are an immense step up from the thicker, creamier long wearing lip colours from before (i mean these) and i much prefer them. i think the YSL Vernis à Lèvres are my favourite lip products of this year. even though i don't wear super bright lips so often - these work so amazingly well that i am really stunned.

one swipe of product with the built-in applicator - stain effect left behind when the gloss is swiped off

just so you know - Blogger seems to wash out the colours after i uploaded the photos, in real they are even a bit brighter than that!

i shot the lip swatches both on my super old compact camera and my not too old DSLR, the colouring seems a lot warmer in the compact cam but i still want to show you both versions - you decide.

1. bare lips

compact cam

DSLR

2. very thin first layer dabbed on with the fingers for a light stain effect

  compact cam

DSLR

3. second layer for full impact colour

4. 4 hours later

5. 7 hours after application

DSLR - with flash
i fixed the foundation around my lips but not the colour itself.

tihilw

bare lips - as a soft stain

full application - after 4 hours

  2. I love the colour but the stain this colour leaves on me looks really horrible! like orange-tomato-death :/

    1. i think the stain is so transparent that it really depends on your natural colour of lip-pigmentation. have you just tested it on or did you buy it? or else you could try #7, it's much more neutral coral and less orange.

    2. I bought it. my lip pigemntation is light - medium (most of the time light though). I love how it looks on you actually. I got #12, #7 and #17 and those look good. but I really hate the smell, also I find them very difficult to apply but once they set, they look great (I also moisturize my lips with my BB eye cream and I have no problems with dry lips, etc). I think #8 just doesn't suit my skintone as well (N10 natural-olive leaning).

    3. i guess the stain is just true to colour on your paler lips, it's actually a true (yellow based) orange stain, right?
i have no problems with the application at all, i usually dab on some of it onto my lips and smooth it out with my finger for a first layer and after letting it set, i would apply a second layer with the applicator.
i doo agree that the smell needs to get used to or a lot of affection for the product to bear.
i really want to get #7 & maybe #12, too. how do you like them?

    4. I really like thise colours on my lips. I have to say, #7 is a bit sheer for my taste (it looks beautiful but once the gloss wears off and the stain remains it's visible but you could use any other lipstick to achieve this, also I don't know how this one works with darker skintones, it is very light and sheer imo). I think you will have more fun with #12. it's a very nice rose red and visible all day long, it tints the lips beautifully and I like how it looks after 2 layeres (I feel like it brightens my face/complexion a bit). I do think that #7 is very dupable and almost every coral gloss will have the same effect (of course, texture is different, etc). I don't like to have that many dupes (or dupes at all) :P

  3. Die Farbe steht dir sehr gut! :)

  4. I can't believe! It lasts only for two hours on my lips..I still love it though and want more colors :)I'm using no. 7 now, the shop assistant chose it for me and I think it's perfect for day-time wearing but this one looks gorgeous too!

    1. oh really? and i thought they would last well on most of us, if not as long as on me, at least more than 2 hours. that's a pity for you! do you apply it onto bare lips (no balm underneath)? at least you like the colour! #7 is also on my wishlist.

      Delete
    2. no, I don't use any lip balm underneath but the shop assistant used touche eclat before applying on my lips so I might give it a go..the same is happening with benetint, after 1-2 hours is gone completely..maybe there is something wrong with my lips :))

      Delete
    3. i think the touche eclat shortens the lasting time quite a lot if you had it as a base! i haven't tried benetint though, but since it's a liquid stain i guess it would have a good staying power - maybe it's just your individual skin-reaction.

  5. What a wonderful comprehensive post. I have one of these no 17 and while I find the formula remarkable I find it difficult to apply as it is lighter than my natural lip colour. I have to carefully apply in layers onto moisturised lips and not rub my lips together. But I don't think I would have these problems with the darker colours.

    1. somehow i already felt that this might become a problem with the paler shades of the range. i skipped them because they looked quite light compared to my natural lip colour and i was afraid that it would be trickier to get them evenly applied.

  6. This is really lovely on you! I tried this one out, and it seemed too orange on me - but I do love it on you.

    1. thank you! i think this shade looks rather orange on paler lips and pink based complexions.
this is a shade that either looks wearable on you or quite extreme - and if the case is the latter, you have to really like it to sport such a colour. there are many other, more universally flattering shades in the range though - somehow i wanted to try the extremes with these (quite cool-toned pink and very warm orange).

      :)

  10. I like the soft stain on you, looks very natural. I swatched this the other day and actually quite liked the orangeness of it. A bit disappointed that it shows up more as a red :/

    1. thank you.
how intense is you natural lip pigmentation? if you have rather pale lips, the colour will read more orange on you than on mine.

  11. Wow, this color looks amazing on you--both as a light stain and a bold lip! I haven't tried this particular color yet, but I think it'll fit right in with all the other orangey-coral lip glosses/lipsticks that are coming out for summer!

    1. thanks! i think this is a colour you can safely pack into your 2012-summer-wardrobe. a bit brighter and more yellow based than an orange i would wear anytime else, but this season makes me wanna be a bit bold, so it's absolutely appropriate ;)

Can I ask you something off-topic? I saw that you repurchased the Paula's Choice RESIST serum. I take it that it performed better than the others you were meaning to try?
    Thank you!

    1. thank you Lulu!
the Paula's Choice serums are a long story, but in short: i really really like it, it's my workhorse-serum, so i always want to keep it around. it heals the skin super fast, i even put it onto zits and pimples at night and by the morning the inflammation is almost gone.
for a more detailed review, just check the Paula's Choice or Skincare label on the sidebar.

  17. Beautiful on you. Thank you for posting your review on this color, I wondered if it would be too bright based on online product pictures but it looks very wearable. I love it! I purchased the glossy stain in #12 and I can't wait to try it.
