Catrice new range - fall 2012. (dupes!)

a photo-heavy post of some Catrice products i recently bought, few are from the old permanent range but the major part are newly launched products.

EYESHADOWS

i bought 5 powder eyeshadows, only 2 of them from the new range and one (in the middle you see Mr. Copper's Field) i even re-bought after selling it but then missing it. my previous review of Mr. Copper's Field you can find here.
Catrice's Absolute Eye Colour powder eyeshadows contain 2g each and cost 2.75€. they come in a sturdy acrylic case.

__________#350 Starlight Espresso__________

this is such a great matte shadow! this muddy grey is superfine and creamy smooth, not too hard or dusty. it applies evenly and pigmented, reminds me very much of MAC Matte² texture especially since Starlight Espresso seems to be a perfect dupe for MAC Copperplate eyeshadow, maybe a tiny bit more warm. i love Copperplate for my brows so i intended to use this as brow powder also. it works very nicely! and also as a crease colour for a nude look this is perfectly suitable. i wish they did a wider variety of neutral shades in this formula.
i used it as brow powder in all my eye makeup shots for this post, if you want to see how it looks worn, just scroll down a little.

__________#590 Dorian's Grey__________

a very promising new shade is Dorian's Grey. a pale grey with gold and pink shimmer in it which made me think it was a dupe for MAC Vex instantly. in direct comparison, Vex has a stronger pink duochrome sheen while Dorian's Grey has a gold duochrome. this eyeshadow is silky and sheer, i like to use it as a blending colour (to neutralize otherwise too warm eyeshadows and to add a special twist with the slight gold sheen) or on the inner corners.

__________#400 My First Copperware Party__________

this is a permanent shade. i heard that it's a perfect dupe for MAC Satin Taupe, and it is. the texture and pigmentation are even superior to Satin Taupe. i was never a big fan of this icon eyeshadow by MAC, but it's a basic shade that shouldn't be missing in an extensive collection. just like Satin Taupe, Catrice My First Copperware Party looks like a plummy brown in the pan but turns to a weird orange brown once swatched/applied on my skintone. i only use it when i want a very warm eyeshadow look. do you have similar problems with one of these shadows?

here you can see how the cream shadow in Copper & Gabbana looks worn on the lid and lower lashline with My First Copperware Party eyeshadow in the crease/outer V.

__________#560 I Like To Mauve It__________

i had very high hopes for this eyeshadow when i first saw it on various blogs. i thought Catrice I Like To Mauve It might make a perfect drugstore dupe for my beloved Le Métier de Beauté Corinthian. however, ILTMI is nowhere near being a dupe. it's too firmly pressed, very sheer and flaky. on top of that, i have problems with flaky silver fall out with this eyeshadow. it misses a lot of dimension and depth from the mix of warm and cool tones that Corinthian has and applies just as a sheer, not even buildable lavender sheen on my lids. quite disappointed with this colour!

i applied Dorian's Grey in the inner half and I Like To Mauve It on the outer half of the lid and lower lashline.

CREAM EYESHADOWS

i bought 3 Made To Stay Longlasting Eyeshadows. they are cream shadows with high lasting power and are suitable to wear alone or underneath powder eyeshadows. they contain 5g and cost around 4€. they come in a glass pot, i think the opening is too small and the product level too low, quite uncomfortable if you want to apply with your fingers.

__________#020 Romans Gone Bad__________

is a permanent shade. it's a dark pewter and very much reminds me of Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in Skinny Jeans. it has a creamy texture, not as smooth as Benefit's but workable. it blends nicely and sets to a smudgeproof finish. i don't like that its pigment is not very fine though, it looks a bit like smudged dirt on my lids. if you can't get Skinny Jeans, Romans Gone Bad is acceptable as affordable alternative. but if you can, don't even consider this.

__________#080 Copper & Gabbana__________

Copper & Gabbana looks like a rich, warm bronze in the pot. applied, it's rather a light peachy gold. not what i wanted. texture, shimmer effect and lasting power are ok, though. go for Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in Marry Up if you can, it's more complex and bronze.
as for a tihilw-pic, scroll up to the My First Copperware Party eyeshadow review, i've worn it there.

__________#070 Mauvie Star__________

this is an overly interesting cream eyeshadow. the greyish purple with multicolour shimmers made me think of Chanel Illusion d'Ombre in #83 Illusoire immediately. in direct comparison, it pales beside Chanel Illusoire. its base colour is too thin, the shimmers too loose and too chunky. with Chanel, you get some colour but TONS of pretty sparkles.
Mauvie Star is the best of the bunch, though. remember to pack on some more product after you blended out the first layer, otherwise it's just lame.

NAILPOLISHES

i picked up 2 of the new polish shades. i feel like they're all the same now...
Catrice Ultimate Nail Lacquers contain 10ml each and cost about 2.50€. they have a wide, rounded brush which is comfortable to use.

Catrice Oh My Goldness! is a rich orange gold/bronze with metallic foil finish. it needs 2-3 coats for full opacity, i think one coat would look good over another polish also.
i love this shade! really great as an accent.

tihilw

sorry for the tip wear, the photos were taken right before i wanted to remove it, it was already a week old ;)

last product is Steel My Heart nail polish. it's such a pretty dark shade with multicolour & holographic shimmers in the bottle. however, i didn't get what they mean with "Brushes Metal Effect" on the bottle otherwise i wouldn't have bought it. it dries to a matte finish, but not only a smooth velvet matte - no, it's a wizen matte. this is how the skin of the solarium lady must be texture-wise. oh, or like blood sausage! yes, that's is how this polish looks dried. i'd only wear it with a glossy top coat.

wet & glossy

dry & wizened

did you buy a lot from their new range?

  2. Thank you for the first proper swatches of ILTMI and the Mauvie Star cream shadow!
They caught my eye instantly when they sent out the press infos...but they are no where near as to what I expected. :(

I found the tester of ILTMI so bad I didn't even take a picture of the shadow in the end. And as for the cream pot - the colour looks so nice but swatched it's just a lame purpelish grey with waaaay too much glitter and metallic shimmer. Blergh´, why does the drugstore hate on matte shades? The only matte creamy shade I know of is that Maybelline color tattoo and it's fabulous. Le sigh!

    1. you're welcome! i also was sooo excited when i saw first press sneak peeks, but i'm quite deflated now. the texture of ILTMI reminds me of The Knoble Knights (d/c). also a very beautiful colour but with horrible texture.

i think matte shades, especially matte cream eyeshadows are very unforgiving. only the slightest hint of low quality and the result will be very poor. shimmers always conceal shortcomings in texture and quality very well. that's why i don't rate brands from their frost finish products anymore - the mattes shed a true light on them.

  3. Thank you so much for the beautiful swatches and comparisons:) I really like Catrice cosmetics, they just recently launched in my country...I am not sure if the new colors are out here. I will have to check...I am definitely going to buy some of the new cream eyeshadow.

yes, catrice is quite high in demand for swaps now, finally makes a european brand desirable for u.s. gals ;)

    2. I am from HK and I can't get many of Europe's and US's best make up. ><

    3. really? i always thought you can get everything in HK o.O
but on the other side, you have access to all the great asian brands, right?

      Delete
    4. Yes, most Asian brands are available here, except a few (including Suqqu which I have to buy in Japan).

I would love to have some cheap and good quality matte shadows, like the Catrice for example! perhaps mattes are not that popular among the mass asian market~~

      cheers,
      jacq

    5. yes, the asian market certainly focuses on at least shimmer, mostly glitter. i still love their textures, though and the variety of nuanes offered. i think Suqqu makes the perfect balance of mattes, satins and shimmers in their eyeshadow palettes. and it must be a skincare paradise :D

  7. I got Starlight Espresso as well and I agree with you, it's wonderful - and Go Charlie Brown! is another great matte from the Catrice range, it's darker and warmer than SE. I swatched ILTMI instore and was very disappointed, it looked so promising. And re: Steel My Heart: I won't be able to get that blood sausage reference out of my head, yuck (and I like blood sausages but don't want my nails to look like them). Does the finish stay the same even if you add a glossy topcoat? Thanks for such a great overview of some new products, as always!

    1. i also swatched Go Charlie Brown, i think the texture is not as brilliant as SE, so i skipped it. i might go back to take a second look now ;)
haha this matte texture is really yuck. i haven't tried it with glossy top coat yet :)

    1. hehe, finally a european brand that creates lemmings for US beauties ;) i'm sure they'll expand even more very soon. they're the same company as Essence, and Essence performed the jump over the big pond quite well.

  10. Wow they're all so beautiful - thanks for all the comparisons!
I wish Satin Taupe looked that good on me, it just pulls purple on my skin :(

    1. thank you! haha, contrary to you i wished for satin taupe to be more purple/cool toned on me! i think the very warm shadows don't suit me as well. seems like this shadow plays its tricks with us!

  11. Hi nice haul. do you know where can I buy catrice eyeshadows online? Im here in Asia and we don't have access to catrice eyeshadows.

    1. thank you! as much as i know Catrice is a in-store brand only, i don't know of an online shop. maybe you can find some on ebay? if you wish, we can work something out and i will custom purchase it for you. just get back to me via email (contact form).

    2. Thanks for the reply :) I checked out ebay and found a nice seller selling catrice eyeshadows :)

By the way, do you know where I can buy burberry lipsticks online and are they worth the price? I heard a lot of raves about their lipsticks and it made me curious.

    3. you're welcome! it's great that you found a source for Catrice products! :)
i don't know about burberry lipsticks, i never tried them. but on The Beauty Look Book Sabrina has written many reviews and has great comparisons of the shades. online, Burberry Beauty is only available in the online shops of US department stores, and of course the official Burberry online shop. maybe Burberry has an online store for your country too? or do you have a Burberry shop or counter in a bigger city near you?

  13. Loved your review, I've started trying Catrice eyeshadows a short while ago and I'm loving them so far. Between Oh, It's Toffeeful! and Mr. Copper's Field, which one do you prefer/think it's better?
Nailpolish-wise I only have After Eight, kind of like Jealous Jordana e/s from The Balm. Requieres 2 coats on it´s own or 1 coat over a black base. Gorgeous!

  15. I've come back to this post several times, and I can't even buy Catrice in my country! There's something about the square pans and the packaging that calls to me.

I especially like the look of Starlight Espresso, which is understandable as Copperplate is one of my favourite eyeshadows. I hope you review more matte eyeshadows in the future. I do enjoy a good matte, and yet I don't have many in my stash. Strange, eh?
